Episode Zero: The Origin Begins!

episode zero, replacement players

vhs_tapeOh, hi! Didn’t see you there. Welcome to the beginning of the start of the origin of the inception of Replacement Players, my brand new podcast.

What is this and why am I doing it? Questions I often ask myself, about everything. But I will explain the true meaning of Replacement Players as efficiently as I can.

As you probably know if you’ve ever read anything I’ve ever written, I have tons of video tucked away in the Vast and Dusty Scratchbomb Video Archives. A good chunk of these archives consist of broadcasts of old sporting events. I love to rewatch these games because I love the sensation of witnessing a narrative unfold in real time. You can see things being “decided” about these games–their place in history, the legacy of the players involved–as they happen. You can also see how what we remember about certain players and teams clashes with how they were regarded at the time. And you can laugh at weird old commercials and outdated graphics, too.

So, like any good crazy person, I’ve decided I must share this experience with others, and that’s what I’m doing with Replacement Players. I’ve asked some friends of mine to watch games from my collection and talk about them with me. I’m going to pick games they remember watching when they happened, games in which they had a deep emotional investment, but which they haven’t seen in a long time. Then, we will come together and discuss what it feels like to watch them again after so much time has passed, how our memories both jive and clash with what we see on the screen. There will also be plenty of laughing at weird old commercials and outdated graphics.

I’ve got a truly amazing array of people lined up to participate in this podcast, and I’m super excited to share our conversations with the world. The first episode of Replacement Players is set to go up on January 7. We’re gonna start with a bang by talking about one of the craziest games ever played. I will say no more, lest I spoil the surprise. I can tell you, however, that this commercial that aired during this game might be the least crazy thing about it.

If you’d like to receive all of this intro/backstory in audio form, you can listen to and/or download Episode Zero below. All you early adopters can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes right here. In the meantime, tell your friends, tell your enemies, tell everyone who will listen and then tell them again! The word, it must be spread! And remember to meet me back here on January 7 for the official launch of Replacement Players.

How weird! I got a pack of assorted vintage baseball cards from a co-worker for Christmas last week, and the Rick Camp card stashed within prompted a re-telling of this very game. Can’t wait to hear it all!
